TOM BERMINGHAM of CORK.. 1943 – 2020
IN THE over 70 year history of Cork senior football finals there must never, surely, have been one to equal the drama of yesterdays (1961) championship decider at the Athletic Grounds in which Avondhu survived by the skin of their teeth to beat Clonakilty 1-7 to 1-5. For drama it was similar in many ways to this year’s Munster semi-final when Cork miraculously snatched the most improbable of all dying second victories over Kerry.

William ‘BILLY’ O’BRIEN (Ballinlough) has been one of the most enduring and engaging personalities on the Cork Pitch & Putt scene since the 1960’s.When he joined Ashgrove, Ballinlough, in 1966, Ashgrove boasted 18 holes and was situated behind the Silver Key pub, close to the modern day Ballinlough course. In the 1971 Cork Intermediate Strokeplay championship played out of the Ashgrove club, Billy fired 103 for 36 holes to tie with Bernard Feeney of Rocklodge at Douglas. However, his oppoent prevailed in the nine holes play off.
