Bobby Brohan of Ringmahon; Evergreen & Cork Celtic Fame - A Soccer Legend From Blackrock

A soccer name of great admiration from a glorious goalkeeping career in times past is the legendary Bobby Brohan. The Blackrock born No.1 won a schoolboys cap in 1955 V England at Luton, England and Ireland were at the wrong end of a 9 – 0 deficit after 60 minutes, when Ireland brought in reserve keeper, Bobby Brohan. Bobby’s impact was immediate and England failed to add to their 9 goal tally as the Blackrock native defied everything that came his way. At the end of the match, both sides allowed him centre stage as the 17,000 attendance gave him a standing ovation.

On home soil Bobby was part of the Ringmahon Rangers Under 16 League team in 1956 who gained maximum points without conceding a goal. He also won an Under 16 Cup medal in 1955. The name Bobby Brohan was now prominent in Cork soccer circles and League of Ireland Cork side, Evergreen, signed Bobby in 1956/57 season. Bobby’s reign at Evergreen lasted a few seasons before he made a decision to return to his original club, Ringmahon Rangers in 1962. This was Rangers first season in the Munster Senior League and Bobby was their goalkeeper.

Cork Hibernians was the next stop on Bobby’s soccer journey and with Hibs he was their goalkeeper in the F.A.I. Cup final of 1963, which they lost 2 – 0 to Shelbourne at Dalymount Park.

A pen picture of Bobby from the 1963 FAI Cup final match programme:

The Brohan family of Blackrock need little introduction to Cork’s sports fans of times past and searching around the peninsula for “People of Distinction” in Blackrock Online sport, one of the foremost names on our radar was Bobby Brohan.
