David Aherne Outstanding Loyalty To Blackrock FC

David played all his football with Blackrock FC and played a major role in the Blackrock Munster Junior Cup winning teams of 1953/54 and 1954/55. The titles were won against Clonmel 2 – 0 and against Waterford Bohemians, also winning 2 -0.

The outstanding David was also on the Blackrock team that lost 3 – 1 to Glemore Celtic, Dublin, in the 1958/59 F.A.I. Junior Cup semi final, played at Turners Cross. In a remarkable career, David Ahern, progressed to win his third Munster Junior Cup medal V Caledonians of Limerick in a final played at Flower Lodge in 1961. In 1964 , Blackrock’s most successful year, he also

played a major role, winning his fourth Munster Junior Cup medal and became the only player, at that time, to win four Munster Junior Cup medals.

Further honours came David’s way with selection on Cork A.U.L. teams. He also played on the Blackrock team that lost 3 – 1 to T.E.K. Dublin. In 1963. Also in December 1974, a great Blackrock tragedy occurred when three prominent local soccer players and well known fishermen, lost their lives on the River Lee. The village of Blackrock was in deep mourning as David Ahern of Blackrock FC; and Michael and John O’Leary of Ringmahon Rangers fame, lost their lives in the prime of their lives.

Inducting David Ahern to our Blackrock Online “People of Distinction” is recognition and appreciation of his outstanding contributions to Blackrock FC during his illustrious soccer career.
