Tom Fitzgerald started out his remarkable football career with Ringmahon Rangers and is credited as the first ever Ringmahon goalkeeper in the first ever match played by Rangers at Schollboy’s level. The match was played at the Mardyke v Western Rovers.

In 1952 Tom was the reserve goalkeeper on the Republic of Ireland Under 15 team V Wales. He

transferred his allegiance to Glasheen in 1953 and his career ignited as Glasheen won the Under 16

League and Cup double.

Further honours were garnered at Glasheen with a Munster Minor Cup; Two A.U.L. Minor Leagues and Shield medals. However Tom Fitzgerald in 1957, decided to join Blackrock FC and was on the Junior team that lost 3 – 1 V Glenmore Celtic, Dublin, in the semi final of the F.A.I. Junior Cup, played in Turner’s Cross in season 1958/59.

The famed goalkeeper was also on the team that reached the final of the F.A.I. Junior Cup V T.E.K.

Dublin, in Dalymount Park in 1963. The road to the final provided Blackrock with victories over Rockmount; Shelbourne; Fairview of Limerick fame; and then Drogheda Utd. Away. That match finished 0 – 0 thanks to a penalty saved by Tom.

The replay came to Turner’s Cross and after a mere fifteen minutes, Blackrock were two down but then turned in a magical performance to run out 5 – 3 winners. It was now onwards to the final but alas T.E.K. claimed the laurels with a 3 – 1 victory.

The illuminating career of Tom Fitzgerald blossomed further in that same year as he was chosen as

goalkeeper on the Cork A.U.L. and Munster Junior teams. As a result of his impressive performances, Tom was selected for the Republic of Ireland V Irish League in 1963.

The upward spiral continued in Blackrock’s most successful season, as the club won the A.U.L. Division 1 League and Shield; Top Four and the Munster Junior Cup. In further recognition, Tom was selected as goalkeeper for a Cork Hibernians selection against the mighty Glasgow Celtic, in a match played at Flower Lodge.

As one of Blackrock’s greatest soccer icons, the name Tom Fitzgerald, was foremost as an inductee to Blackrock Online “People of Distinction” in our sports category.
