Christy Aherne

A junior international and native of Dunlocha Cottages, Christy Aherne was selected as captain of the Republic of Ireland Junior team which defeated a Birmingham team 2 – 0 in Birmingham in 1961. Christy also played V The Irish League in 1961.

The outstanding displays of Christy earned him the captaincy of the Cork A.U.L. and Munster Junior teams, also in 1961. With Blackrock FC he was a vital player in the F.A.I. Junior Cup final of 1963, played at Dalymount Park, Dublin, a match lost by Blackrock 3 – 1 to T.E.K.Dublin.

Further honours were garnered in the years 1961/64 as Blackrock and Christy won two Munster Junior Cup titles and further successes were achieved as the club won the 1st Division Shield; President’s Cup and Munster Junior Cup in season 1963/64.

In the colours of Ringmahon Rangers, Christy also excelled and proceeded to win numerous Munster Senior League honours. In an outstanding career, the name Christy Aherne is prominent all around Blackrock Online districts and now noting Christy in our collection of “People of Distinction” in sport of Times Past, will solidify Christy’s immense contributions to the game of soccer.
