Willie Dorney: Blackrock's Renowned Soccer Administrator

Willie became a member of the Blackrock Soccer Club in the 1950’s and proceeded to become secretary for a number of years and his sports administrative life extended to the Cork A.U.L. also, where he acted in further officerships. In 1972, the Golden Jubilee year of the Munster Football Association, Willie was elected to the position of chairman.

One of Willie’s greatest achievements was the role he played in convincing famous German team, Borussia Monchenglabach, to travel to Flower Lodge to take on high flying Cork side, Cork Hibernians, in a friendly to mark the Golden Jubilee of the Munster Football Association.

The German side were laden with internationals such as Bonhof, Wimmer, Heyness, Vogts and the world renowned Gunter Netzer. Aside from soccer, Willie’s other passion for sport in the 1950’s, was rowing and he was an esteemed member of the Blackrock Rowing Club. Amongst his rowing contributions he served as Hon. Secretary and also as Vice Captain in 1957, whilst his brother, John, was the club captain in the same year.

In saluting the sporting achievements of Willie Dorney, he was the son of William, Bill,Bill, a member of the Rockies 4 in-a-row county hurling champions of 1910,11,12 and ’13.

The outstanding and historic Blackrock team of that era set down a record that succeeding Rockies teams never repeated. In our Blackrock Online “People of Distinction” in sport, Willie Dorney is inducted as a sports administrator of outstanding merit and he now joins an illustrious collection of Blackrock sports people in various codes from times past.
