Finbarr Buckley Soccer Tribute

FINBARR BUCKLEY started out his sporting career with Crofton Celtic winning the Under 16 League and Cup in 1948/49 season and he also played on the Cork Schoolboys team V English side Bradford, winning 1-0 in 1949.

This Schoolboys team included players such as Tommy Twomey, Blackrock; Jackie Hennesst, Glasheen and John Horgan, Tower Rovers. In 1950 Finbarr was also on the Munster Youth team V Leinster and this team included players such as Mick O’Keeffe; Mick Canty; Jerry Geaney; Willie Neville and Jackie Hennessy.

At this time Finbarr was courted by several cross channel clubs but stayed at home to persue a rugby career. He lined out with Highfield and was on the Munster team in 1958 with colleagues such as Tom Kiernan; Noel Murphy; Liam Cashman and Jerry Walsh. Further honours included his selection on a Cork team to play Limerick in the Inter Cities at Thomond Park, Limerick, in 1959.

Going back to soccer, Finbarr also lined out with Ringmahon Rangers, winning AUL League 1; AOH Cup; O’Keeffe Cup and Presidents Cup medals. He was also chosen on a Cork Selection V The TV All Stars in the 1960’s, a game played at the Mardyke and played also on a Cork Athletic Selection V Frank Swifts Selection. The venue was the Mardyke in 1953.
